The overarching theme for Science Week this year at Settle Primary School is “thinking like a scientist” and applying the scientific method.
Albert Einstein described using the scientific method as a refined way of everyday thinking. I showed how this could be done with a hat, coat and a science star.
In assembly on Monday, I performed a short simple play which began with me looking around (observing) and pretending it was raining. This was followed by thinking about how to keep dry and looking at the hat and coat. Next, I put them on and went out in the pretend rain to investigate. I recorded that I remained dry and concluded that the hat and coat can be used to protect me from the rain.
We looked at how all this can be summarised into a simple scientific image which is easy to remember – The Science Star.
Here is a phone photo taken from my Teaching Primary Science book where you can find out more about it and how it can be applied to match enquiry objectives in a science curriculum.

Each class was then set a challenge of using the science star in a science topic they were studying and to follow this by communicating their activity in a variety of ways such as writing, drawing, photographs or a PowerPoint.
I am due to return and view the work in each class and award science stars to everyone. Anyone producing really outstanding work will become a Super Nova!
