Autumn offers some truly spectacular views on the patch at this time of year, with vibrant colours painting the landscape in golds, browns, and russets.
I set off on my walk with my companion, the drone, as I had done for the other three videos in this series.
This time, however, was different. Just as I was about to start, I was wired up for sound and asked to provide a guided commentary as I walked around the patch, just as I do with visitors.
The result, I suspect, adds a sense of realism to the experience. You’ll certainly hear my broad northern accent and the occasional stumble as I explore the patch, spotting interesting features and thinking on my feet about what to share next.
Afterwards, it occurred to me that you could do something similar on your own patch with your children. Perhaps scout the area first to identify points of interest, so you’re prepared when they ask “What is this?” or “Why does that happen?” This advance preparation can help you feel more confident in guiding their natural curiosity.
There are now four videos in the Patch on the Planet series, taking you through all the seasons. Use them simply to engage with nature through the images and music, or download the “Stop and Chat” guides for three of them to discover more detailed information about what you’re seeing. There isn’t a “Stop and Chat” for this autumn video as the narration provides the commentary throughout!
