Just before Easter I took Year 1 on a tree walk as part of their plant studies. We walked around the school grounds learning how to recognise the different trees…
Some logs had been set out earlier on the grass and we turned them over and found mini- beasts hiding there – slugs, woodlice and beetles.
Back in the classroom the children made close observations on the twigs, leaves, catkins and pine cones they had collected by making careful labelled drawings. Some of the items found their way into the class curiosity box.
I had made collection of twigs from twelve different tree species. The children are studying the way the buds burst and how the leaves grow.
The Woodland Trust are running a citizen science project at the moment to investigate how fast spring is spreading across the United Kingdom. You can join in by noting when oak trees come into leaf. For more details go to https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
