Seeing Stars
Learning about stars and constellations
If you look up into a clear night sky, you can see stars dotted all over the place. They form a huge group called a galaxy.
Hattie and Brea are making a galaxy to help them remember what it is.
I expected them to create a random cluster of stars in the middle of the paper, but they soon began arranging the stars into patterns, just as ancient people did. This surprise allowed me to show the girls some of these patterns, which we now call constellations, and to look for them in the night sky.
The girls’ constellations are, from the left, Cassiopeia, The Plough (or Big Dipper), and Orion. They are only very simple introductions to these constellations. To find out more, try:
