Filey Brigg – then and now!

And so it begins!

Sixty years ago on Filey Brigg in East Yorkshire I discovered brittle stars. They are different from the more familiar starfish in that they have very long, thin flexible arms. They wave their arms about to swim.

And here I am 60 years later on Filey Brigg. There was a super moon the night before, pulling the tide down the into the kelp beds.

We looked around in the rock pools and found shore crabs, hermit crabs, limpets, periwinkles, shrimps, a butterfish also called a gunnel and a common star fish.

I didn’t find any brittle stars but you can find out about them and other starfish here.
